NWA 2861 is a beautiful L4 chondrite that resembles NWA 2839 and 2840. However, it has a
slightly different chemical make-up and is notable for the greater abundance of Troilite inclusions
that occur in the slices we have cut. The matrix is almost black, yet retains chondrules and plenty
of fresh metal. Most of the chondrules are small and there are no large inclusions, giving the
meteorite the appearance of a more heavily shocked type. Attractive and a little unusual. Several
specimens have been shown photographed with a flash and in natural light to show the true
nature of the matrix and the metal content. Many pieces have unusual chondrules or small
inclusions so look at the enlarged images closely.
NWA 2861 - 25.6g....£45/$75
A nice slice showing good chondrules in the mottled,
dark matrix. There are two Troilite inclusions present.
NWA 2863 is another L4 chondrite but shows a lighter and more mottled interior than NWA
2861. The matrix is predominantly light brown with many darker shock zones. Shock grade is
2, weathering grade is 3. There is plenty of fresh metal within the meteorite and voids/pores
are not uncommon (in fact, some of the images look like the meteorite is sweating but this a
combination of the voids and the different reflectiveness of the shock zones). A nice L4 that
contrasts well with others listed on the site. Low total known weight of around 500g
