Edaphosaurus boanerges - pathological sail spines
The tall sail spines of Edaphosaurus were prone to injury from fighting,
attack from predators and even mating. The long spines would fracture and
upon healing show signs of twisting or unusual bone growth. The two
specimens figured here show distinct pathologies of the spine sections.

spine. The fossil is beautifully preserved showing exceptional bone
detail. The specimen measures 1.75 inches long. Ryan Formation
(lower Permian) of Oklahoma. Priced for rarity and recommended for
any serious Permian collector. $300
