Fossil Rich Matrix
We have several different samples of fossil rich matrix from the Richard's Spur locality currently available
for sale. Each is the residue of dissolving blocks of limestone or clay and each contains abundant vertebrate
remains. The samples are ideal for schools or the private collector but ideally a magnifier or microscope
should be used to sort the material, especially the fine fraction of any sample. All out matrix is only available
in limited quantities and once it is gone, that is it. All the samples came from the Dolese Brothers quarry
near Lawton, Oklahoma.
The material illustrated below represents the most comprehensive collections anywhere on the web.
Typically there are 3 grades of material - coarse, medium and fine. We recommend all is sorted with a
microscope but the coarse material could be done with the naked eye. Medium and fine material definitely
require magnification. Even though some samples may come from the same block the difference in particle
size means there can be a significant differences in the types of fossils and species found between the fine,
medium and coarse layers. For a complete overview of the fauna we suggest samples from all three grades.
