Cenozoic Microfossils

On this page are all our microfossil samples ranging in age from the Palaeocene to recent. As always, if you are wanting a sample on this page that we have only listed in a collection just contact us and let us know. We welcome any and all custom orders.

  • Palaeocene 

    Palaeocene matrix slide collection

    • The post KT boundary microfossils were notably smaller than there Cretaceous ancestors and deposits of Palaeocene age are uncommon. 
    • This collection consists of 4 micropalaeontology slides containing unglued fossil ricm matrix from the Matthews Landing Marl of Alabama, the Kerens and Kincaid Members of the Midway Group of Texas, and the Landenian of Belgium.

  • Eocene

    Eocene of France matrix collection

    • This comprehensive collection contains 9 samples of microfossil rich matrix from the Eocene of France. 
    • These deposits are known for their diverse mollusc and foraminfera faunas. Preservation is excellent.


    • A sample included in the collection that is of particular note is Saint Gobain (shown in the image above). There is practiaclly no matrix in the sample, just fossils. This sample can be purchased separately if required, just drop us a line.
    • Additional samples of excellent richness are the cuisian of Sables de Pierrefonds and the Calcaire Grossier of Grignon, and these too can be purchased separaretly.

  • Eocene of Europe microsample collection

    • Four samples of Eocene age microfossil matrix from Europe. Included the Lede Sand of Belgium plus the Selsey, Colwell Bay, and Totland Bay formations of the UK. 
    • The Selsey material (below) is another amazing sample made up of practically a single species of foraminifera (Nummulites variolarius) and can be purchased separately.

  • Eocene of North America microsample collection

    • A collection of 6 different Eocene age samples from North America. 
    • Includes the Weches Greensand and Cook Mountain of Texas, the Gopsort, Bashi and Pachuta of Alabama, and the Shubuta of Mississippi. The Shubuta clay is an exceptional sample.

  • Barstow Formation Silicified Insects matrix

    • This is a rare offering of acid etched matrix from the Barstow Formation of California that contains abundant fragmentary remains of aquatic arthropods, especially the tiny, delicate and rarely fossilised fairy shrimp Archaebranchinecta barstowensis and the occasional Schistomerus diving beetle. 
    • Coprolites of the fairy shrimp are also common.

  • Pliocene

    Pliocene of Italy microfossil matrix slide collection

    • This collection of four microfossil slides covers the lower (Zanclean), middle (Piacenzian) and upper (Gelasian) Pliocene of Italy with sediments coming from Torrente Stirone, Rio Santerno, Rio Torsero and Calachi di Monteveglio. 
    • Foraminifera are extremely abundant, making these slides excellent for study.

  • Pliocene Bore Hole matrix slide collection

    • Two rich microfossil samples originating in boreholes drilled by the oil industry. Included is a bore hole sediment from the Philippines and one from the Phillips Oil well #3 in Louisiana. 
    • Both are extremely rich in foraminifera. Housed in micropalaeontology slides.

    • Included are the Timms Point Silt, Lomita Marl, Beaumont Formation and Cromer Forest Beds, plus an unnamed Lagoon Facies from Texas. 
    • The Timms Point Silt is an interesting sample as it was deposited in a freshwater environment.

    Recent Shell Sands of the United Kingdom

    • This collection consists of 20 different samples from around the coast of England, Ireland and Scotland. 
    • All manner of invertebrates are preserved including bryozoa, foraminifera, ostracods, oysters, mussels, snails, worms, polychaete worm jaws and more. 
    • The exact make up of the collection varies based on localities available at any given time, but each is specimen rich (as shown in the images) and will be chosen from those included in the 3 collections that are described below.

    • A collection of 8 samples of specimen rich shell sand from Cornwall. 
    • A rich and diverse fauna is present across these samples including bivalves, snails, barnacles, bryozoa, foraminifera, polychaetes, algae etc.

  • Shell Sand of England Collection

    • Ten recent shell sand samples from the coastline of England.  
    • Localities include Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Scarborough, Fleet Lagoon and Gore Cove (Dorset), Saundersfoot, Hope Cove (Devon). Coarse, medium and fine grained samples are included. 
    • The Fleet Lagoon sample material consists of two smaples, one rich in charophytes and another with abundant snails. Both of these are freshwater samples.
