Stratigraphic Collections

On this page you will find numerous collections of Palaeozoic faunas. Each comes from a different geological formation and they represent wonderful overviews of a number of different faunas that are otherwise largley unavailable to collectors. The majority of specimens were collected in the 1960's from sites that are no longer accessible. You will find these collections can include corals, bryozoans, snails, bivalves, brachiopods, trilobites, sponges, nautiloids and more. All major aspects of each fauna are included.

  • Ordovician

    Bromide Formation Stratigraphic Collection - 48 species

    • An excellent collection of 48 species from the famous Middle Ordovician Bromide Formation of Oklahoma. 
    • Snails, bivalves and brachiopods are a dominant part of the fauna. 
    • Members of the prolific crinoid fauna are also included.

  • Bromide Formation 22 species Collection

    • An excellent collection of 22 species from the famous Middle Ordovician Bromide Formation of Oklahoma. 
    • This is a smaller collection than that offered previously that includes only the more common species

  • Decorah Shale 40 species collection

    • Another middle Ordovician fauna, this time from Minnesota. 
    • This was one of the first described Ordovician faunas in North America (although at the time it was thought to be lower Silurian).
    • Brachiopods are again and important part of the fauna as are the molluscs. 
    • Bryozoans, corals, crinoids and nautiloids are also represented.

    Brownsport Formation 50 Species Collection

    • From the famous Silurian glades of Tennessee this collection is comprised of 50 different species. 
    • Dominated by the abundant brachiopod and coral fauna. 
    • Also includes some of the rare trilobite and crinoid fauna. 
    • Bryozoans are also represented.

  • Henryhouse Formation 42 species collection

    • 42 species from the trilobite beds of the Henryhouse Formation in Oklahoma. 
    • Brachiopods dominate, but also included are snails, trilobites, corals, bryozoans and crinoids. 
    • Collected from an exposure that was turned into a cattle pond 50 years ago.

  • Waldron Shale 27 species collection

    • Originally described by James Hall, the Waldron Shale of Tennessee and Indiana preserves a middle Silurian fauna. 
    • This collection contains 27 species, most of which are from the Newsom Station locality in Tennessee. 
    • Included are trilobites, brachiopods, bivalves, crinoids, bryozoans and gastropods.

    Bois d'Arc Formation 20 species collection

    • 20 species from the trilobite beds of Oklahoma. 
    • This collection showcases the brachiopod fauna with a smattering of other groups, such as molluscs, corals and crinoids.

    • From the Amana Beds of the Independence Shale in Iowa. 
    • Rarely offered for sale and from an old locality.

    Imo Formation 18 species collection

    • A rare collection from Leslie, Arkansas consisting of 18 species, including some of the rare bivalve fauna. 
    • Ammonoids, brachiopods and gastropods are alos included.

  • Bangor Limestone 12 species collection

    • 12 species of brachiopod and mollusc from the Bangoe Limestone of Russelville, Alabama. 
    • The extensive echinoderm fauna is not included in this collection, instead this set focuses on other groups

  • Pennsylvanian

    In this section we are happy to be able to offer one of the largest offerings of Pennyslvanian fauna stratigraphic collections. All of these collections were collected in the 1960's and cannot be replaced. Once they are gone, that is it. 

    Boggy Shale 31 species collection

    • A wonderful collection of brachiopods, gastropods, bivalves plus a coral and ammonoid. 
    • Very nice preservation from a rarely mentioned fauna.

  • Finish Shale 33 species collection

    • A famous fauna from the Virgilian of Jacksboro, Texas. This locality is one of the few that is still active.
    • Includes a diverse fauna of brachiopods, gastropods and bivalves plus the odd ammonoid and coral.

    • 18 species from the Frensley Limestone (Lare Murray Formation) of Mannsville, Oklahoma. 
    • A rarely collected fauna, this collection consists of brachiopods, bivalves, cirnoid plates, gastropods and bryozoa.

    A rare fauna of Missourian age from Bridgeport, Texas. The fauna is not diverse but includes snails, bivalves, corals and brachiopods.

    • An upper Desmoinesian fauna from bear Ada, Oklahoma. 
    • The collection comprises 30 species of predominantly brachiopods and bivalves, but also includes the odd echinoid, ammonoid and bryozoa.

    Florena Shale 16 species collection

    • A good, rare example of a marine fauna from the lower Permian of Kansas. 
    • Limited in number of species but reasonably diverse in the faunal makeup with examples of the crinoids, echinoids, nautiloids, brachiopods, bryozoans, gastropods, bivalves, corals and trilobites all being represented.
